WHAT IS THE MEANING OF:

PROVERBS 3:3 KJV

Proverbs 3:3 (KJV)

"Let not mercy and truth forsake thee: bind them about thy neck; write them upon the table of thine heart:"

This verse from Proverbs encourages us to deeply internalize two fundamental virtues: mercy and truth. Let me explain its meaning and significance.

Understanding the Key Terms

Mercy (Hebrew: chesed) - This encompasses more than just compassion. It refers to loving-kindness, steadfast love, and covenant faithfulness. It's about showing goodness and kindness beyond what might be deserved.

Truth (Hebrew: emet) - This refers to reliability, faithfulness, and integrity. It's not just factual accuracy but moral truthfulness and genuineness in character.

The Imagery and Meaning

The verse uses two powerful metaphors:

  1. "Bind them about thy neck" - Like wearing precious jewelry or an important identifier close to yourself. In ancient times, important items were sometimes worn around the neck as reminders or symbols of identity. This suggests keeping these virtues visible and accessible.
  2. "Write them upon the table of thine heart" - This is about internalizing these values at the deepest level. The heart in Hebrew thought was the center of decision-making, will, and character. This means these virtues should become part of your core identity.

The Broader Context

This verse appears in the early chapters of Proverbs where a father (Solomon) is giving wisdom to his son. It's part of a larger section about the benefits of pursuing wisdom and living according to God's principles.

The combination of mercy and truth is significant. Together, they create a balanced character that is both principled (truth) and compassionate (mercy). This pairing appears elsewhere in scripture, reflecting the character of God himself who is described as "full of grace and truth" (John 1:14).

Practical Application

In practice, this verse encourages:

  • Making mercy and truth core values that guide your decisions
  • Letting these virtues be evident to others (around your neck)
  • Internalizing these qualities so deeply they become second nature (written on your heart)
  • Maintaining both compassion and integrity in all relationships

The verse suggests that these virtues should not be situational or temporary but constant companions throughout life's journey.
