The King James Version (KJV) of Proverbs 1:7 reads:
"The fear of the LORD is the beginning of knowledge: but fools despise wisdom and instruction."
This verse communicates a foundational principle in biblical wisdom literature. The "fear of the LORD" here doesn't refer to being afraid of God in a terrified sense, but rather having a deep reverence, awe, and respect for God.
The verse suggests that true knowledge and wisdom begin with acknowledging God and having proper reverence for Him. This reverence creates the right foundation and perspective for gaining genuine understanding.
The second part of the verse presents a contrast: while the wise person starts with reverence for God, the fool rejects wisdom and instruction. This establishes a theme that runs throughout Proverbs—the contrast between wisdom and foolishness, and how our attitude toward learning and divine authority shapes our path in life.
This verse essentially sets up the framework for the entire book of Proverbs, suggesting that true wisdom is inseparable from a right relationship with God.
