The King James Version (KJV) of Proverbs 27:23 reads:
"Be thou diligent to know the state of thy flocks, and look well to thy herds."
This proverb contains practical wisdom about responsible stewardship and management. In its original agricultural context, it advises landowners and shepherds to pay close attention to their livestock—to know their condition, health, and needs. The verse emphasizes the importance of vigilance, care, and personal involvement in one's responsibilities.
The deeper meaning extends beyond literal animal husbandry. This proverb teaches several important principles:
• Attentiveness to responsibilities: We should be diligent in monitoring what has been entrusted to us, whether that's property, business, relationships, or other obligations.
• Proactive management: The proverb encourages active oversight rather than passive neglect. Waiting until problems become serious before addressing them leads to greater difficulties.
• Personal involvement: The instruction to "know" and "look well" suggests direct, personal engagement rather than distant or detached management.
• Stewardship principle: Everything we have is ultimately a gift to be managed wisely, not simply possessed.
In modern application, this proverb might apply to:
• Business owners monitoring their enterprise's health
• Parents attending to their children's development and needs
• Leaders staying connected with those under their care
• Individuals managing their finances, health, or other personal resources
The wisdom lies in recognizing that prosperity and well-being don't happen automatically—they require consistent attention and care. Neglect often leads to deterioration and loss, while diligent oversight creates the conditions for flourishing.
